| The Bullitt County
Veterinary Center opened in Shepherdsville
by Dr. Ray Schaaf in 1978. Dr. Schaaf, a native of Louisville,
KY completed his undergraduate degree at Eastern Kentucky University
and later attended the University of Illinois, where he obtained
his degree in veterinary medicine. Dr. Schaaf continues his education
by attending professional meetings each year and taking classes
via the internet. When the hospital opened it was a mixed practice
with several doctors who treated large as well as small animals.
Today, the practice is restricted to small animals only, but does
include birds, exotics, wildlife, and other small animals such
as goats and sheep.
The practice is family
owned and operated, with Dr. Schaafs wife, Jessica, acting
as office manager and a technician.
The Schaaf family has
their own menagerie of needy animals that were lucky
enough to find their way into their home. They currently have
6 house dogs and 6 house cats, 6 horses, 2 cows, 3 pygmy goats,
5 rabbits, 3 guinea pigs, a cockatoo, 2 parakeets, geese and ducks,
chickens, finches, canaries, and bees.
The hospital is located 3 miles East of I-65 (exit 117) on Highway
44 East in Shepherdsville. 1/2 Mile east of the KOA campgrounds
on the North Side of 44E.
